LOS ANGELES - May 30, 2013 - PRLog -- A small toddler in Texas got his little hands on a 9 mm handgun in his home yesterday, he put the gun in his mouth as a toddler would do with any object and the gun fired, killing the two year old. This unfortunate incident prompted Child Protective Services to come and remove the remaining children living under that same roof.
Trenton Mathis, the two year old from Cherokee county in east Texas, was pronounced dead at a Tyler hospital after he shot himself in the face, KLTV reports.
The young boys grandmother, Carolyn, told the station that Trenton went looking for chewing gum through a bedroom door that was not closed all the way. He got into her bed, and found the handgun on a nightstand.
The home belongs to Carolyn Mathis and her husband, who were present for the accidental shooting. The other two children were removed from the home by authorities after the incident, the Tyler Morning Telegraph reports. It wasn’t immediately clear whether charges would be filed.
The Mathis children were placed in the home last year when their parents home was deemed unsafe by CPS after abuse and neglect.
The CPS recommended that the children would be placed back into their grandparents home but the judge ruled against it at a custody hearing.
This case is not the first this week where a child accidently fires a weapon found.
