PRLog - May 30, 2013 - Former Boca resident prepares to swim around Key West (AGAIN!)
Fundraiser to benefit The Immokalee Foundation
Immokalee High School teacher and former Boca Raton resident Steve Becker will be participating in the annual Florida Keys Community College Swim Around Key West on Saturday, June 22, 2013 to raise funds for The Immokalee Foundation. This is his fourth time completing the swim, and first as a fundraising effort for The Immokalee Foundation where Mr. Becker has spent the past two years of his time as a math tutor after school and a student mentor for at-risk youth. His goal is to raise $5,000 for the foundation programs that benefit the children of Immokalee.
The mission of The Immokalee Foundation is to build pathways to success for the children of Immokalee. He hopes this fundraiser will raise awareness and resources for The Immokalee Foundation and the great work they do for the kids. Becker states “I love the kids and I saw a need to give back. I see their quest for knowledge and their struggles to achieve the requirements needed to get accepted to college. I’m thrilled when one of my students gets accepted to the college of their choice or notification of a scholarship they’ve won!”
About the swim, Becker says, “Each time I swim in Key West, my times have been steadily better. This year I hope to break five hours again.” He is currently training one to two miles per day during the week at the Sterling Oaks pool and four to five miles on the weekends in the Gulf of Mexico between Wiggins Pass and Docs Beach House. The distance around Key West is 12.5 miles, roughly the equivalent of running two marathons. “If all goes well and I can avoid the perils of sharks, sunburn and dehydration, I hope to be finishing up shortly before noon on the day of the big swim!”
