FMD advises you to pick the lifestyle that you want not the job you think you want

Most career problems stem from the fact that we are terrible at picking jobs. We think we are picking a good job and then it turns out to be a bad job.

May 29, 2013 - PRLog -- It's almost impossible to pick a good job on the first try, actually. So don't think you'll be the exception

FMD realise that only 5% of people pick the right job on the first try, and in general, it is thought that these few are less creative, less adventurous, and less innovative, which makes a conventional, common path work well for them. At FMD it is questionable whether you should even aspire to be one of those people who picks right the first try. But, FMD also understand that with that said, we all still want to be good at choosing paths for ourselves.

FMD share some guidelines to think about, whether it's your first career or our fifth career.

Don't Believe the Hype

We have a grass-is-greener approach to professions that are not our own. FMD offer the example of being a lawyer as an example of a career choice which is idealised. You see their exciting life on TV: a gloriously safe path from college to law school to a high paying job. But behind the scenes, the reality is very different from the perception others have, in fact the truth is quite grueling; years of study which in turn creates debt to then hopefully find a role at a law firm and start at the bottom.

FMD suggests rather than looking at the job you think you want, look at the lives you see people having, and ask yourself whose life you would want. That's easy, right? But now look deeper. You can't just have the life they have now. You have to have the life they lead to get there.

Look at the successful writers you read. Most of them wrote for years in obscurity, risking long-term financial doom in order to keep writing. Do you really want that path for yourself?

The same is true for startup business owners. It is hard, it takes  huge dedication, commitment and work ethic. FMD recommends if  you decide you want to start up your own business, look at the life the person had before their company got stable. Most people would want to run their own, well-funded company and control their own hours. Very few people would want the life you have to live to get to that point, even though the reward is huge, the majority of people are unable to handle the sacrifices required.

Don't Overcommit

FMD feel that testing out lots of different jobs is a good idea, the Managing Director at FMD had many roles and career paths prior to becoming an entrepreneur, this allowed him to truly feel content when he found the right choice. Job hopping is the sign of someone who is genuinely trying to figure out where they fit. Quitting  when you know you are in the wrong place is a natural way to find the right place for you. A Curriculum Vitae with lots of wrong turns is not cataclysmic.  It's about telling a story and everyone has a way to tell a good story about their career no matter how many times they've changed jobs.

FMD proposes that if you have experienced various roles and career paths and you do consider  starting a small business, then there's still a lot of thinking to be done before starting a small business of your own.

FMD appreciates through their own experience that starting a small business is one of those huge, life-altering events, running a successful small business takes the same depth of commitment and desire. as a marriage, you're going to be living with your business 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Like any relationship, if you want your small business to be successful, you're going to have to work at it. And it's going to have its ups and downs and surprises. If you're the right person with a solid plan, starting a small business of your own can be the most satisfying, exhilarating experience of your life.

FMD share what they had to answer prior to starting a small business:

The first step to starting a small business is to examine whether or not starting a small business is right for you - not your neighbour, friend, coworker, or whoever else is trying to tell you that you should start your own business.

FMD believes that the main quality that you have to have to start your own business is a burning desire to do it. Running a small business isn't for the ambivalent or indifferent. You have to really, really want to be your own boss, transform your dream into reality, or market your product or service.

Look inside yourself and ask these three basic questions before starting a small business of your own

Do you really want to operate independently and be the person making all the decisions and shouldering all the responsibility?
Are you willing to work hard and make the sacrifices starting a small business entails?
Do you have the self-confidence and self-discipline that will enable you to persevere and build your new enterprise into a success?

FMD explain that unfortunately if you have answered "no" to any of these, you're probably not ready for starting a small business. Overnight success stories are just that... stories. The reality is that success is won through hard work over time. And you want to start and run a successful small business, don't you?
