Honda Rumored to Return to Formula 1 RacingHonda confirms the rumor, McLaren stays mum on the automaker's involvement.
The story does not end there, however. Despite Honda's confirmation of their return as McLaren's engine supplier, McLaren has recently denied the rumor, giving credence to the speculation that part of the reason Honda said they would not be returning until 2015 is based on McLaren's contract with Mercedes. Honda's partnership with McLaren led to multiple titles from 1988 to 1991, with a duo of racers earning titles in 15 out of the 16 races in the 1988 season alone, a record that Honda surely wants to repeat. Honda's role as a green automaker is likely to come in valuable with some of the new rules coming into play for Formula 1, as they are working on a 1.6L V6 turbocharged engine that uses energy recovery technology for improved efficiency. The same or similar technology is available in the showroom today in the form of Honda's many alternative fuel vehicles, with hybrids taking advantage of the energy recovery technology like regenerative braking to help recharge their batteries, from the CR-Z to the Civic Hybrid, even to plug-in options like the latest Accord Hybrid.
