How to Solve an Orthodontic Emergency

The use of orthodontic appliances can sometimes result in emergencies, such as a loose bracket or wire, arising while the patient is at home - here, a Surrey Invisalign expert explains how patients can handle those emergencies on their own.

LANGLEY, British Columbia - May 29, 2013 - PRLog -- Vancouver, British Columbia - Anyone who has worn braces knows how uncomfortable a loose wire or broken bracket can become. Dr. Aly Kanani, who provides orthodontics for adults (http://www.invisibleorthodontics.ca/guildford-orthodontic-centre.html) and children, explains how patients can correct these problems until they can be seen by their orthodontist.

If a bracket has become broken, but is still attached to the wire, it is important to leave it in place. If it is uncomfortable for the patient, it can be covered with wax. Patients will receive special wax when their braces are first placed on in case emergencies such as this arise, or in case the brackets are uncomfortable for the patient. It is important to call the orthodontist's office right away, as a broken band that is ignored for a long period of time could delay a kid's orthodontic treatment. It is important to remember that rubber bands should never be attached to a loose band or bracket.

"Loose wires can be somewhat common when braces are first put on," says Dr. Kanani, an experienced Langley Invisalign (http://www.invisibleorthodontics.ca/Benefits_of_Invisalig...) provider. "I begin treatment with a very flexible and thin wire that can come out of the braces tubes."

If this occurs, patients, or their parent or guardian, can try to place the wire back in the tube by using sterilized tweezers. If it cannot be put back in place, wax can be used on the area to ease discomfort. The patient should arrange an appointment with their orthodontist as soon as possible to correct the loose wire.

Over the course of treatment, patients may experience a wire poking out of one of the brackets or bands. The wire can be bent back into place using a pencil eraser, or sometimes even a spoon. As the braces begin to align the teeth properly, there could also be a time when the wire becomes too long in the back and pokes the patient. Wax can be used to ease discomfort until an emergency appointment can be scheduled.

If a patient has run out of wax, there are temporary dental filling materials that can be purchased to use as a substitute to protect the mouth from irritation caused by a loose wire or bracket. If it becomes necessary to cut the wire before the patient can get to an emergency appointment, it is important to remember to use sterilized cutting utensils (nail clippers work well).

A sore mouth and teeth may be a side effect of achieving a straighter smile. Patients can take over the counter pain medication as needed according to the medication directions.

"While not common, emergencies can arise during the use of any orthodontic appliance," says Dr. Kanani, who offers invisible braces (http://www.invisibleorthodontics.ca) to his Surrey patients. "Even if you think it is just a minor problem, it is important to call the orthodontist's office right away to let them know what has happened. It is essential to the treatment process that the braces or other appliance be in proper working order so that treatment will not be delayed. The orthodontist will schedule an emergency appointment if needed and ensure your treatment stays on track."

If you have experienced a true emergency, such as trauma to the mouth, it is important that you immediately visit your doctor or emergency room. For other emergencies, such as damage to a tooth, consult with your dentist or orthodontist as soon as possible.

Should an emergency arise during the course of treatment, your orthodontist is only a phone call away and can ease any discomfort. Don't hesitate to call your orthodontist with questions or concerns during the course of your treatment. With a bit of extra attention, the braces wearing process can go smoothly and comfortably.
