Leading Respiratory Physician Offers Lung Health Screen At King Edward Vii’s Hospital

FULHAM, U.K. - May 29, 2013 - PRLog -- King Edward VII’s Hospital is pioneering a new way of monitoring for lung cancer. Consultant Respiratory Physician Dr Neal Navani is offering patients a specialist screening computed tomography (CT) of lungs. The methodology has been shown to be an effective way of diagnosing lung cancer and other lung diseases early, which is crucial for best outcome.  

“Tobacco from cigarette smoke is known to be the most common cause of lung cancer. Unfortunately, many lung diseases, such as lung cancer and emphysema cause no symptoms or problems in the early stages. However, detecting lung cancer early (before it causes any symptoms) often means it can be cured,” says Dr Navani.

“A screening CT scan of the lungs is therefore a wise investment for anyone who has a significant smoking history or has been exposed to smoke, in order to identify risks of cancer and other diseases, and could bring considerable peace of mind,” he says.

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the UK. It kills more men than prostate and bowel cancer combined and more women than breast cancer. The survival from lung cancer is poor with only 5% of patients surviving five years after diagnosis. However, patients who have a lung cancer detected early with the low dose CT scan have a vastly improved outcome with over 80% surviving five years.

Monitoring for lung cancers is recommended for people aged 55 to 74 years who have a significant smoking history – but it is not a substitute for quitting smoking. Anyone wanting to monitor the health of their lungs can visit Dr Navani for a spirometry (a bedside technique to diagnose COPD or emphysema), followed by the CT scan where advised.

“The best way to avoid lung cancer is to stay away from tobacco. Smokers should contact a healthcare professional to find out more about the stop-smoking services available to them,” says Dr Navani.
