Perran Foundry Offers Keys To The Past

A site steeped in Cornish history will reach a significant milestone on the 24th June as it opens its doors for viewings.

May 29, 2013 - PRLog -- Perran Foundry at Perranarworthal, between Truro and Falmouth, was one of the most important industrial sites of its period and has been under development for many years to enable new homes to flourish from the foundations of its 200 year history.

Used in the manufacturing of mining equipment and employing 400 men at its peak, Perran Foundry was established in 1791 by the Fox family of Falmouth - innovative industrialists and philanthropists who also created the great gardens of Trebah and Glendurgan, as well as founding the country’s first Polytechnic Society.

One of the site’s most iconic buildings – The Hammer Mill where all of the workings took place – will be the first opportunity for people to acquire a home in this historic setting, as the show home opens for private viewings on 24th June with Heather & Lay and Savills.

This new development has a special significance for Tim Heather and John Lay – Partners at the Falmouth based independent estate agents, as Natalie Oliver, New Homes Manager of Heather & Lay explains:

“Perran Foundry is very close to our hearts here at Heather & Lay as it was one of the first projects the partners - Tim Heather and John Lay – were asked to appraise when they opened over 25 years ago.  As we celebrate over a quarter of a century in business, we are excited to be able to offer people the opportunity to make their home in a location that is key to Cornwall’s history, as well as our own”.

Natalie continued:
“Perran Foundry is widely considered to be one of the most important industrial sites of its period in southern Britain. Like ‘The Lost Gardens of Heligan’, it had quietly decayed into romantic ruin, settling into its wooded landscape. But now, following years of false starts and failed plans, it is being revived by sensitive renovation and regeneration, acknowledging its immense value and I’m delighted that we can soon welcome potential buyers to see this for themselves”.

The Hammer Mill show home will offer buyers the chance to experience one of the seven new units, with spacious living spaces and private parking - an ideal location for families or professional couples as well as high end holiday letting.

The Hammer Mill is the most iconic building on this site, converted from what was originally the heart of the old foundry, to provide seven unique houses with up to four bedrooms over three floors.

With the past complementing the contemporary, it blends modern comforts including double glazed facades, balconies and under-floor heating with character and charm, such as exposed walls, feature windows and original trusses.

The lofts, apartments and riverside homes being developed at the Perran Foundry commemorate the building’s iconic past, as each building has adopted its name from its original purpose.

With The Hammer Mill key to the Foundry’s past, Heather & Lay and Savills are confident that each of the seven homes available within the building will be ready for occupation by the end of the year.
