Follow on Google News | Bringing Pompeii to life in the centre of LondonThese two entire Roman Cities were ruined in just 24 hours by the violent explosion of Mount Vesuvius, in the foothills of which the town was situated, and around 20 miles from the Southern Italian town of Naples. Residents, reluctant to evacuate their homes, were trapped and killed by the heavy ash fall, not to be found until workers in 1738 excavated the 12 layers of topha which was up to 25 metres at its deepest. Taken from their home in Naples' National Archaeological Museum (http://cir.campania.beniculturali.it/ Tickets are available to buy from the British Museum website.
