“This moment has been a long time coming,” said Robert Hamon, CEO for the Center for Creative Education. “We are truly grateful to the people who helped us get to this exciting point.” After a long construction delay, the arts integration organization received a boost to its construction coffers last fall when Palm Beach County awarded them a $550,000 grant to jumpstart the project. Long-time CCE supporters, Kenn Karakul and James Held, contributed an additional $100,000. The City of West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Association then awarded CCE a reimbursable grant to complete exterior renovations to the building that the organization first broke ground for in 2008. The arts, education and cultural center is considered by many to be the catalyst for Northwood’s renaissance. CCE’s open house will be held during Northwood Village’s Art and Wine Promenade, which will feature a live Journey Tribute band, ‘Odyssey Road’. The open house will commence with a special ribbon cutting ceremony at 6:15 featuring West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio, Palm Beach County Commissioners Priscilla Taylor and Paulette Burdick, as well as other VIPs. The evening also promises to showcase CCE’s mission of arts integration – tying the arts to academics. The opening will feature a display of children’s artwork, along with a special performance by Boynton Beach-based Freedom Shores Elementary students, recent graduates of CCE’s “Manatee Insanity” program. The 14-week class, which was conducted earlier this year, paired a CCE artist with classroom teachers to bring the children hands on, involved learning. Arts integration enlivens education by using the arts- painting, singing, writing and more to reinforce core subjects like math, science and language arts. It encourages creative thinking by allowing kids to use their imaginations and reinforces life skills like cooperation and compromise as children work together on projects. “We are so excited about being able to expand upon our mission and touch the lives of more students in our community,” continued Hamon. “Having a building to call our own will allow us to create more opportunities for children to be exposed to arts integration programming.” In 2012-2013 CCE will serve 12,750 children in nearly 70 sites all over Palm Beach County. Programming at the Center is scheduled to begin next fall.
