May 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Dance Theatre of Harlem Dazzles at Kravis Center Community Outreach Event

(West Palm Beach, FL - May 23, 2013) The sweet sound of soul-stirring spirituals were the highlight of previous Gospel Galas at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, while this season’s Community Outreach Event presented the incredible Dance Theatre of Harlem, which has garnered international acclaim for its superior artistry.

Hosted on April 19 by the Kravis Center’s Community Relations Committee chaired by board member John Jenkins and sponsored by The Chastain Charitable Foundation and Ms. Beverly Sommer, this performance was part of the Dance Theatre of Harlem’s first national tour in eight years. It was an eclectic evening of ballet featuring both classic and newly commissioned repertoire that thrilled, delighted and exhilarated everyone in attendance.

Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, the Dance Theatre of Harlem utilizes the art of ballet to embody the social vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Before going into Dreyfoos Concert Hall for the performance, the audience first enjoyed an informative “Beyond the Stage” discussion between Chastain trustee Steven Caras and the dance troupe’s charismatic artistic director, Virginia Johnson, who shared her future vision for Dance Theatre of Harlem. In addition, everyone was serenaded by the heavenly voices of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church Male Chorus, who were positioned on and around the grand staircase in the Kravis Center lobby.
