Love Story Set in Alabama Involves a Slave Owner’s Son and a Slave

CONWAY, Ark. - May 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Dark Clouds Over Alabama is a powerful love story set in the Old South. The story takes place in 1853 at Twin Oaks Plantation in central Alabama. The Civil War is still years off, but the struggles over the immorality of slavery have long been an issue.

Twenty-one-year-old Obadiah Bradford’s life is changed forever when he accompanies his father to purchase a new household servant in nearby Selma. The young man is deeply affected by his immediate attraction and intense feelings for Penelope, the beautiful mulatto daughter of his family’s new slave. This is the story of his forbidden love for Penelope and how he overcomes every challenge by adhering to his deep faith in God.

The book combines fact and fiction. In an interview with the Prattville Progress newspaper in Prattville, Alabama, Arkansas author Carl J. Barger said he became fascinated with this area after uncovering some of its history during a search for the owners of several slaves who were a client’s ancestors. Prattville founder Daniel Pratt, a slave owner who reportedly treated his slaves well, is one of the characters in the book, and the relationship between the fictitious plantation family, the Bradfords, and their slaves is based on that of Pratt and his workers.

The book’s release coincides with the 160th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation as well as the release of the movie “Lincoln.” Relive a fascinating part of American history in Dark Clouds Over Alabama.
