Ensley Is On The Move With Arts Education:

Kuumba Community Arts Center Fosters Creativity In Birmingham Neighborhoods

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - May 21, 2013 - PRLog -- Birmingham, Alabama - The Ensley Recreation Center and Kuumba Community Art announced a partnership to bring arts education to the Ensley Community. This relationship allows children and eventually adults access to digital photography classes at the Ensley Recreation Center, and is a first-of-its-kind approach to arts education in the area.

The inaugural class started on April 2, 2013, and will culminate with an exhibition that features the work of young African-American males ages 8-13. The exhibition will be held at the Ensley Recreation Center on May 30, 2013 at 5pm. The public is invited.

Other classes in the visual, performing and literary arts will be added to course offerings in the future. This is important because having access to arts education helps “develop the sense that they [children] can be agents of their own learning and that they can make a positive change in their own lives and their surroundings”.

About Kuumba Community Art

Kuumba Community Art, founded by Deidre Clark, is a program that is dedicated to bringing arts education to the Ensley Community. Kuumba means ‘creativity’ in Swahili and is also a principle of Kwanzaa that says that we “always do as much as we can in such a way that we make our communities more beautiful and more beneficial than we inherited them’. And this is the heart behind the program.

To learn more about Kuumba or the exhibition, please contact Deidre Clark at 205-602-7255 or by emailing at kuumbacommunityart@gmail.com. Please feel free to visit the website at kuumbacommunityart.com.
