By: Alzheimer's Care Resource Center The main goal of the dementia specific hurricane preparedness program is to help caregivers plan ahead by creating an individualized, dementia specific hurricane plan that is unique to the physical and psychological needs of each individual patient. "When you care for someone with Alzheimer's disease or dementia, preparing for a storm goes far beyond buying some supplies or choosing what emergency or special needs shelter you might go to", said Elayne Forgie, President and CEO. Recognizing that each caregiving situation is unique, and that each person with dementia may react differently to all of the different challenges and triggers that come with a storm, the first thing that the Alzheimer's Care Resource Center does is to meet with the caregiver to begin to assess exactly what the patients individual needs will be. "This is a crucial first step and there is never a charge for this visit. One of our nurses, geriatric care managers or social workers, will consult with the caregiver by telephone or in person, at our office - in The Gathering Place, or at a time and place most comfortable and convenient for them", Elayne Forgie stated. "Although hurricane season doesn't start for a few more weeks, now is the time for families to start thinking about and planning for hurricane season. Our exclusive dementia specific hurricane plan is customized and individualized for each, patient and each caregiver. When all is said and done, and the dementia specific hurricane plan is complete, our caregivers are able to rest easy knowing that if and when a storm approaches, they will be ready".
