TRENTON, Mich. - May 20, 2013 - PRLog -- The promotional posters will say this is the “38th year” Trenton will hold a summer festival along West Jefferson Avenue, but this year’s event will likely be best known for a number of “firsts.”

First and foremost is the event’s new date and name. Moved two weeks earlier on the calendar, it will no longer be known as the “mid-summer” festival. Slated for June 28-30, it is now simply the “Trenton Summer Festival.”

And the date change has propelled it to a spot where it becomes the “first” event of the busy festival season Downriver.

Typically, the festival attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year and averages around 125 artists and craftsmen, food vendors, a children’s playmarket and a popular array of sporting tournaments, including Volleyball and Kayak Demonstrations.

This year, however, it expects to exceed all those numbers — in some cases by wide margins.

As of late April, the number of artists, crafters, vendors and sponsors was running 25 percent ahead of last year.

“We are very satisfied that our committee made the right decision to move the festival dates,” said Scott Barr, the festival’s chairman. “We had discussed the move for several years, but when (City Councilman) Bill LeFevre made a formal inquiry last year for a date change consideration, our group got to work.”

The group conducted email surveys to guests, vendors and exhibitors, posted on Facebook and weighed pros and cons of various dates thoughtfully and systematically.

“The last weekend of June makes us the first festival of Summer,” Barr said. “The Downriver Cruise is also that weekend, but we are working together to cross promote our events and feel this is a win-win situation as well.”

Also new this year, the group has added a Thursday night kickoff party, dubbed “A Sample of Summer.” It will feature a wine tasting organized by Casa Del Vino and sponsored by the Trenton Rotary Club. It is planned for 7-10 p.m. at the main stage, which is at the corner of West Road and West Jefferson. Tickets will be $15 and include small plates from downtown restaurants.

As exhibitors start setting up their spaces Thursday, the crowd will be swaying to the tunes of country singer Alan Turner and the Steel Horse Band. The group was nominated for four Detroit Music Awards in 2012.

“This band is sure to blow the boots off of any country music lover,” said entertainment chairman Bob Baker.

The emphasis on outstanding entertainment is expected to be evident throughout the weekend, too.

“Because of the date change we really wanted to make sure we brought in name acts and promote the heck out of it,” Baker said.

On Friday night, June 28, the main stage will feature one of the region’s most popular cover bands, Fifty Amp Fuse, from 8:30-11 p.m.

And, due to the fact that there are various 1980s class reunions that weekend, the committee has arranged for ’80s rock band “The Tubes, featuring Fee Waybill,” to performed on Saturday, June 29.

Along with entertainment every hour Friday through Sunday on the main stage, there will also be an acoustic stage located at the corner of Cherry Street and West Jefferson featuring many great local talents.

The committee is very happy that these name acts will be paid for in part by sponsors Jackson, Snider & Parker DDS, Riverside OBGYN, RoundHouse BBQ and 7-11. Additional sponsors are still being sought in hopes of offsetting the entire cost.

If you’d like to be involved with this exciting re-vamped June Summer Festival, the group is still looking for sponsors to be promoted to festival-goers for entertainment, volleyball and street and sidewalk space sponsors.

Sponsorship opportunities start at $200 for Trenton businesses. Call sponsorship chair Kathy Kane at (734) 676-9561, Ext 2, for details.
