GREATER MANCHESTER, U.K. - May 20, 2013 - PRLog -- Peninsula Business Services warns employers they must get stricter with employees who are late for work

Peninsula Business Services the employment law company has said that employers need to do more to address non genuine sickness. The warning comes on the back of research by Peninsula Business Services when it polled a sample of the 26,000 clients Peninsula assist on a daily basis. The snap survey questioned 2000 businesses of which 72% of small businesses said they have an on- going problem with at least one employee who is continuously late. However only 44% of bosses have disciplined workers for being late.

Peter Done, managing director of Peninsula Business Services said today, "Employers pay staff to work set hours, so why should bosses pay staff if they turn up late on a regular basis? Get firm, you need to address lateness and show others that lateness will not be tolerated. If you have an employee who is continuously late then you need to find out what the reason is, give them an opportunity to improve and if it continues to be a problem then discipline them."

"Employers should not be carrying passengers and this also includes employees who are continuously late. As an employer you should expect all of your employees to be in on time, that is when they start getting paid. Being five minutes late does not sound like an issue yet when you add up the frequency of when workers fail to turn up to work on-time then the cost soon adds up. The cost can be significant especially when small firms are trying to make money. "

Done continues, "Be fair yet be firm - that would be my advice. Ensure your employees are aware that being late is an offence that could result in disciplinary procedures. If the employee is struggling with family arrangements, public transport etc. then be flexible, perhaps they can commence work an hour earlier and make up their time throughout the day or the working week. If you show flexibility then the employee will appreciate it, however you should not put up with repeat offenders and these employers should be disciplined. Remember, it doesn't matter how late an employee is, it is still costing the employer money."

Peter Done concludes, "Peninsula Business Services have introduced software, hronline that can help deter lateness and fraudulent absenteeism. Employers will be able to see at a glance repeat offenders and the dates and times when they have been late for work, this in turn can be make it easier to discipline and action. Having documentation will help support your case and if the HR issue results into an employment tribunal then it will certainly help towards your evidence."
