Matthews Gallery Introduces 29-Year-Old Artist David Grossmann

Young, celebrated artist ready to leap into the gallery world

SANTA FE, N.M. - May 18, 2013 - PRLog -- Santa Fe, NM—David Grossmann already had an impressive resume when he strolled into the Matthews Gallery on Canyon Road to introduce himself. His glowing, abstracted landscape paintings have been featured in several prominent national shows and publications. One thing the gifted 29-year-old oil painter hadn’t done was show his work in a gallery, but as of last month he can add that to his list of accomplishments as well. Grossmann is now proudly represented by the Matthews Gallery.

Grossmann was born in the United States and moved to Chile when he was two years old. Growing up immersed in the stunning natural beauty of the Latin American nation inspired in the artist a lifelong passion for the outdoors. He spent his early years filling sketchbooks with dragons and castles, but when he moved to Colorado at 14 years old his work took a serious turn.

“Adjusting to a new culture... was really difficult,” he says. “[My art] became more of an outlet for me than it had been before.” Not long after he arrived, the teenage artist started getting requests for commissions, and he enrolled in formal drawing classes. By 16, he was working as an illustrator for a publishing company.

Despite this early success, Grossmann had a hard time seeing art as a viable career. In college he studied business and Spanish, but after graduation he decided to take a chance and enroll at a fine art academy. That’s when he took his first plein air painting class, and he instantly fell in love with the method.

“That combination of being outdoors and painting, which were two of my favorite things, were just perfect for me," he says.

Since then, Grossmann has developed a unique style that the artist calls “visual poetry”.  Using a gentle, glowing palette, he paints abstracted visions of forests that are melodic in their focus on rhythm and symmetry. Sprawling swaths of landscape transform into flat, smooth planes while scattered trees lend a profound sense of depth.

“I think both poetry and paintings can capture an essence of something and stir emotion and imagination at a very deep level,” the artist says. “In some ways it’s very simplified and thought out, but hopefully it reaches to that level that connects with someone’s heart.”

Grossmann certainly connected with the Matthews Gallery. His work now hangs in the gallery's collection of work by dynamic contemporary artists and European and American modern masters. It's a big but fitting step for a young, talented artist with a promising future.
