Cerritos College Hosted Integrative History and Welding Workshop

The Cerritos College Teacher TRAC in collaboration with the CTE Counselors have hosted an Integrative Workshop series for faculty members since fall 2011.

NORWALK, Calif. - May 17, 2013 - PRLog -- These workshops were created to engage instructors, improve student learning, and increase educational effectiveness. The workshops are funded in part by the Chancellor’s Office, California Community Colleges Teacher Preparation Pipeline Grant.

Workshops are organized by the CTE Counselors and Teacher TRAC staff. The workshops focus on integrative teaching and learning on campus and in the classrooms. The recent event was held on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 in the ME 2 building and the Welding Department Laboratory. Michael Medina, Instructor from Cerritos College Welding Department and Julie Davis, Instructor from Cerritos College History Department presented the topics from their respective disciplines.

To collaborate between disciplines and combine various learning strategies, Mike and Julie discussed the integration between History and Welding from a labor standpoint. They shared their personal experiences, discussed safety from a historical standpoint, the blue vs. white collar careers, and how skilled labor built our modern society. After the lectures, welding students from Teacher TRAC gave live demonstrations on three of the major welding processes in the laboratory. The demonstrations were on Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW).

Over fifteen faculty and staff members attended the History and Welding workshop. “These Integrative Workshops help us be better teachers and helps increase our student engagement and success,” said Cerritos College Counselor Thu Nguyen. Through the workshops the faculty members explored connections between knowledge base, methods, and students, as well as shared teaching strategies, skills and knowledge.
