Designing The Next Economy: A Global Conversation

BOSTON, MA, USA (May 13, 2013) – In this time of volatility and complexity, the role of design to drive meaningful innovation and change is growing. Design and Business leaders are putting new solutions and tools to work, from start-ups to multinationals, from emerging economies to global leaders.

The DMI Design Thinking Conference http://www.dmi.org/dmi/html/conference/designthinking13/conference.htm comes to Santa Monica June 17-19, and is specifically designed to address the challenges and opportunity in the Next Economy. Conference Co-Chair Andreas Forsland puts the role of design in perspective this way:

The world is in a major state of change whether you’re looking at jobs, the environment, access to quality education, health and wellness, transportation, social collaboration and sharing, or multigenerational mobile workforces.  Regardless of which area of the endeavor you happen to be passionate or involved in, now is the time for design to help jumpstart transformations where it matters.”

Speakers will share stories of inspiration and leadership from around the world; solutions that are helping start-ups and large organizations put open innovation, frugal innovation and new technology to work to solve complex global challenges.

DMI selected Santa Monica as a location in part because of the city’s innovative approach to policy making.  It will be the first city in the US to quantify wellbeing at the local level, creating a Local Wellbeing Index, and using the results to inform decisions. Says Santa Monica Mayor Pam O’Connor:

Our Local Wellbing Index is going to be a game-changer, not just for Santa Monica, but for cities across the country and beyond.”

This use of the design thinking approach to address public sector challenges resonates with the DMI community, a global group made up of leaders focused on defining the future of design and innovation management by building awareness of design thinking and doing, ultimately driving awareness of the social and financial value of the approach.

Ravi Sawhney, Conference Co Chair and author of Predictable Magic: Unleash the Power of Design Strategy to Transform Your Business summarizes the conference goals this way:

"One hundred yards from the beach and the Pacific Ocean, in Santa Monica, and only a couple of miles from where Charles and Ray Eames changed the world of design, is where we will come together to explore and examine what the future will look like.  How will we design it and how will design affect existing and new economies?  Clearly the world is changing in front of our eyes. Design will play its role in designing the Next Economy. Let’s explore how and why we will do this."
