3D Laser Scanning Excellent Tool for Project Planning

Oftentimes when a facility must undergo renovation, relocation, or demolition, drawings and documentation of the original construction and subsequent renovations are inaccurate, incomplete, or missing entirely.

RED BANK, N.J. - May 16, 2013 - PRLog -- Because an accurate record of existing conditions is needed to produce detailed estimates and project plans, new drawings must be developed, which can be a difficult, time-consuming undertaking.  This is where 3D laser scanning technology can provide an ideal solution.

Until recently, the development of existing-condition documentation required personnel to take extensive measurements by hand using electronic or standard tape measures, then converting them 2D documents or CAD files.  This method can be particularly labor intensive, especially in spaces where a complicated array of equipment, piping, and structural components are present, and the possibility of inaccuracy or error can be high.  With 3D laser scanning technology, scans done by a single surveyor are incorporated into BIM software to create CAD files in far less time as compared to the field-measured approach, require fewer personnel, and usually are far less costly.  These 3D models contain a vast, highly-detailed amount of information of piping and structural systems with accuracy to within one-eighth of an inch.

The benefits of 3D laser scanning are numerous.  The scanning procedure is non-intrusive and causes very little disruption to facility operations.  On-site measuring and in-house documentation time is greatly reduced.  Objects in difficult-to-access areas can be safely and precisely measured.  Equipment, conduit, pipes, ductwork, catwalks, structure, and other details are separated into layers, and flythrough photo-quality views can be developed, allowing greater detail and visualization. In R. Baker & Son’s line of business, 3D laser scanning is highly valuable for planning selective demolition, plant relocation, rigging and routing, new installations, and other projects.  Accurate spatial information allows greater precision, helps to identify potential problems, and keeps costs in check.  Finally, 3D models and as-built surveys can be electronically stored indefinitely for use on future projects.
