Six Forts of Rajasthan Selected for Listing on UNESCO World Heritage List

JAIPUR, India - May 16, 2013 - PRLog -- Recently, Chandresh Kumari Katoch (The Union Minister for Culture) announced that “UNESCO has selected six outstanding forts of Rajasthan, India to be on World Heritage list”. These six forts are Ranthambore fort, Chittaurgarh fort, Jaisalmer fort, Kumbhalgarh fort, Amber fort and Gagron fort that are situated in six beautiful districts of Rajasthan, namely Sawai Madhopur, Chittaurgarh, Jaisalmer, Rajsamand, Jaipur and Jhalawar. All these forts are excellent examples of centres of Rajput power and control, and were built between thirteen to nineteen centuries.

All forts except Jaisalmer fort were rejected by the UNESCO panel in 2012, when government had nominated them for inscription on UNESCO's prestigious World Heritage List. But, this year government reworked on the documents of these five forts of Rajasthan and re-nominated them with one more fort that was Jaisalmer fort inscription on UNESCO World Heritage List.

According to Katoch, "The nomination dossier or file of the six hill forts was made by the government of Rajasthan, and was sent to the UNESCO World Heritage Site centre in January 2011”. In November, 2012, a two-member team from the “International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS)" advisory body visited Rajasthan, and held a meeting with the officials of Archaeological Survey of India and Rajasthan government. Later, the ICOMOS recommended that all six hill forts be part of the World Heritage Site list.
