“Say it Forward” offers inspiration in an uncertain time

Connecticut family creates sharable, positive messages to “sparkle” someone’s day

Cheshire, Connecticut – May 14, 2013 – Frustrated with a steady diet of negative messages online and a twitter feed buzzing with careless comments and insensitive sub-tweets, Allie Centorino, a student at Southern Connecticut State University, decided she was full.

So Allie, sister Steph and mother Sandra created Say it Forward, a movement that counteracts negativity by curating positive quotes via social media and printing them on colorful cards.  Building on the “pay it forward” concept that encourages a chain of good deeds, the Centorino family’s novel idea spreads cheer and positivity that are easily passed from person to person.

“Our world is difficult enough,” said Centorino who is still reeling from the elementary school shooting in her adopted state and bombings in her native Boston. “We hope our Say it Forward movement adds a little bit of “sparkle” to someone’s day.” Centorino said the cards, which fit in the palm of the hand, trigger a personal connection unavailable in cyberspace. They encourage eye to eye and hand to hand contact when shared. “These little cards might not change the world, but we hope they will change someone’s world,” she said.

Response to Say it Forward has been overwhelmingly positive. The Centorinos have distributed over 10,000 cards throughout New England. Recipients have created innovative sharing methods – sparking a constant chain reaction: “I put a Say it Forward Jar on my desk and co-workers help themselves!”…. “I punch a hole in the cards and use them as gift tags!”…. “I put a card in everyone’s locker at school.”…. “I use the cards as an “ice breaker” at business events.”

The Centorinos have gathered hundreds of inspirational quotes of 140 characters or less, spanning famous sayings from world leaders to simple sentiments from ordinary citizens. They design and print the messages on colorful one inch by three inch cards. People can visit www.sayitforward.me to log and submit their own quote.

Centorino said her family has been personally touched by reactions to Say it Forward cards.  “My daughters and I were in a local coffee shop handing out cards.  One woman read the card, looked at me with a tear in her eye and said, “You don’t know what this message means to me - this card made my day.” Centorino said such small acts of kindness benefit the giver as much as the receiver.

Say it Forward cards are available through the company’s online shop. 100 cards cost $29.97 and are packaged in decorative boxes and jars. Each jar comes with our trademark “teal sparkly heart” that we wear when we deliver the cards.  Collections focus on themes such as Inspiration, Friendship and Gratitude. A new “Be Strong” collection benefits Boston’s One Fund. Centorino said Say if Forward can be customized with any message, making it an ideal complement for charities and fundraisers.

Say it forward + Co. encourages people of all ages to get involved.
