Heritage sites in the region to benefit from a national volunteering event for the first time

Heritage sites are to benefit from the 2013 Give and Gain day for the very first time.

COVENTRY, U.K. - May 14, 2013 - PRLog -- On May 17, thousands of employees across the UK will be getting out into their communities to volunteer their time to help community groups, schools and local charities as part of Give and Gain Day, an annual event organised by Business in the Community (BITC).

It is the UK’s only national day of employee volunteering.

For the first time this year, Museum Development Officers in the Midlands region have been working with BITC to arrange volunteering projects at four heritage sites.

Glynis Powell, MDO for Coventry, Warwickshire and Solihull, said:

“This is a new departure for us. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our heritage sites and so we thought it would be good to match up a small number of sites with the Give and Gain day to show the volunteers from the business world just how much their work could make a difference.”

The four sites taking place in the Give and Gain day this year are:

Thinktank, Birmingham: 8 volunteers from Lloyds will be helping to spruce up the Science Garden and doing some painting indoors.

Museum of Cannock Chase, Staffordshire: 10 volunteers from Electrium (which is part of the Siemens Group) will be painting the Lamp Room which is used for education activities from their museum education programme and special events. (This particular event will be taking place on 20th May)

Avoncroft Museum, Bromsgrove: 10 volunteers from Barnett Waddingham will be spending the day tidying the grounds.

Compton Verney, Warwickshire: 8 volunteers from Black Horse (part of Lloyds) will be planting wildflowers and bulbs into the historic parkland to provide a nearby food source for the bees from the recently introduced hives.

Glynis Powell added:

“These four sites who are pioneering with Give and Gain Day are well spread out across our region, so hopefully that will encourage others to be involved next year.  The day is a chance for us to celebrate with people who would not normally think of volunteering at heritage sites, in the hope that it could also build up a sustainable relationship between the businesses and the sites in future.”

Sponsored by Lloyds Banking Group and Society and in association with BT, Give and Gain Day 2013 is dedicated to getting thousands of employees out of the office, store or factory to volunteer in their local communities. By making volunteering fun, accessible and inspirational BITC believes that it is something all businesses should give their staff an opportunity to do in work time.

Paul Turner, Group Community and Sustainable Business Director at Lloyds Banking Group said:

“One of the best ways businesses can support their local communities is by encouraging employees, customers and suppliers to use their skills and time through volunteering. We are deeply committed to playing an active part in the communities where we live, work and do business. Colleagues across the Lloyds Banking Group volunteer throughout the year, but Give and Gain Day provides the perfect focal point.”
