ETOBICOKE, Ontario - May 13, 2013 - PRLog -- With an underlying theme of nature as a source of inspiration, manipulation and transformation, Sherway Gardens’ (Hwy 427 & the QEW) current Gallery in the Garden exhibit entitled Nature as Muse features Toronto artist Tonya Hart.  The exhibit is on display until June 14 in the corridor at door 3. For more information call 416-621-1070 or visit www.sherwaygardens.ca.

Tonya’s art explores the means to represent our relationship with nature, especially toward other animals.  She works in both two and three dimensions, in whatever media necessary to communicate her ideas. Her exhibition history includes sculpture competitions, tours, installations, performances, group and solo exhibitions.  She graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors, Visual Arts Major, from York University in Toronto. In 1991, Tonya received a Kingston Art Council Student Award and in 2010 she received an Ontario Art Council Emerging Artist Grant.

Her most recent work, Polar Magnetic, was commissioned by the National Capital Commission of Canada and depicts three polar bear cubs enveloped within their magnetic field for the 2013 Winterlude IllumiNation Exhibition in Ottawa. The Jelly Gene Machine, an eight foot tall gumball machine which dispensed  jelly beans inscribed with imaginary genes like x-ray vision, telepathy, ability to fly etc. was featured at the 2012 Scotiabank Nuit Blanche in the Toronto Eaton Centre. INFRA, a sculpture installation of eleven life sized wolves portrayed according to their thermal projection was commissioned by the City of Toronto for Scotiabank Nuit Blanche in 2011.

Tonya has participated in many group and curated exhibitions across Ontario and New Brunswick, and four solo exhibitions in Toronto: The Myomere River at The ArtBar, The Gladstone Hotel; The Pull of the Moon at Paul Petro Special Projects Space; Sleeping with the Muse at the Canadian Sculpture Centre; and Labyrinth with 3 Exits at the Skylight Gallery.
