Boston Children's Hospital Mother's Day Cook-Off Promotes Heart Healthy NutritionPatients and their families gathered in the hospital café on May 8, 2013 to watch the event. The event, titled “Moms at the HEART of the Matter”, was hosted by Fox 25 morning news anchor Sorboni Banerjee, and featured Sweet Cheeks owner and former Top Chef finalist Tiffani Faison squaring off against Sodexo State Street Financial Center executive chef Jacqueline Kelly. Faison was paired with contest winner Gina and prepared pan-seared tilapia, while Kelly and her partner, contest winner Jillian, prepared chicken divan. Clinical Nutrition Specialist Skylar Griggs listed the benefits of heart-healthy foods such as oils, garlic, and avocados, while Banerjee talked with the young patients about how healthy foods can still be delicious. Audience members were encouraged to vote for the best dish. In the end, the contest was deemed a tie. “Revised guidelines recently emerged recommending all children be screened for elevated cholesterol once between the ages of 9-11, and again between the ages of 17-21,” explained Griggs. “The updated guidelines were the first of their kind, as it was previously recommended only children and adolescents be screened with a positive family history of early heart disease or dyslipidemia. The updated screening guidelines also emphasized that in those with lipid disorders, good nutrition beginning at birth has the potential to decrease future risk of cardiovascular disease.” The cook-off was hosted by Boston Children’s Hospital Patient Support Services, the Department of Preventative Cardiology and the Healthy Hospital Organization.
