New Book Exposes Unjust Deaths In Hospitals

Author writes a thriller to spark a conversation about deadly infections that occur daily in the medical wards, but go unreported

MIAMI - May 14, 2013 - PRLog -- Miami, FL, May 15th, 2013 – Golden Plague (http://www.padmorepublishing.com), by the author Ila Monroe, is a work of fiction where the villains are hospital directors and managers of pharmaceutical companies covering up a sinister set of occurrences, and the protagonists, three young adults, trying to stay alive. It depicts a modern day reality which is plaguing public health systems and can and should be eradicated.

“When I began writing Golden Plague, the CDC (Center for Disease Control) had just declared MRSA as the main cause of death by infection in the United States - a higher number than AIDS or any other contagious disease - but for some strange reason this statistic is not widely covered in the media,” explained the author, who added that this fact has meant that MRSA has become a silent killer. The question of why a debate on this bacterium has not been given greater attention, and why, as a result, people continue to die every day from MRSA infections in hospitals, was a major motivation for writing this thriller.

But the book´s real inspiration came from the tragic loss of a close friend's twelve-year-old daughter. “I wrote this book to honor the memory of Sarah, who, after surviving a lung transplant operation, died weeks later from a bacterial infection contracted in the very hospital that was trying to save her life. This injustice hit very close to home, and is suffered daily by thousands of families around the world. It inspired me to tell a story which, although very different from Sarah’s, would get people talking about these issues”.

The story opens with an accident that endangers the lives of technicians at a clandestine laboratory in London, which is studying the resistance of the MRSA bacterium - the main cause of death in hospitals - to existing antibiotics. At the same time, in Chicago, the president of a global Pharmaceutical company is overseeing the launch of a vaccine to prevent infections caused by this lethal bacterium. VALERIA LOPERENA is at the helm of this campaign, as the director of a marketing agency, and will unexpectedly become entangled, alongside her lover JAMES PENTON, in a plot devised by the pharmaceutical execs to attract government and public attention to the MRSA bug, using highly unconventional methods. The couple, accompanied by other characters that enter and exit the fray, embark on a journey to stop the Machiavellian plan before it is too late.

Golden Plague, the most recent publication from Padmore Books, will be released in print and digital media, and will be available at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3...) and Barnes and Noble (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/ila-monroe?store=allprodu...).
