On June 12, 2013 Lea Favor will take the helm at Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center (FWTEC) in St. Paul. Favor will replace Margot Willett, who will retire at the end of May after 10 years as FWTEC’s executive director.

FWTEC is an award winning non-profit structured as a public tennis facility. The center’s flagship youth program, Tennis2College, engages inner-city youth in afterschool tennis and life skill programs. Tennis2College is funded in part by proceeds from FWTEC’s fee-based tennis offerings like court rentals, lessons and leagues.

Favor brings several years of experience in nonprofit management, youth development and curriculum building to her position at FWTEC. Most recently she served as executive director of Eco Education, a St. Paul-based environmental education program. There, she oversaw the non-profit’s array of experiential youth education programs and partnerships with Twin Cities schools.

Prior to her tenure at Eco Education, Favor served as director of education and evaluation at Youth Frontiers, an anti-bullying nonprofit that primarily offers character-building youth retreats for students from 4th – 12th grade.  She also spent 13 years in a variety of administrative roles at The Blake School in Minneapolis, including grade dean, assistant athletic director and girls’ varsity basketball coach.

“I am thrilled to have this opportunity to join the Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center,” says Favor. “I have played tennis all of my life and understand firsthand that the lessons learned on the court are just as applicable to other aspects of our lives—and it is these lessons that inform my decisions to this day.  It is this synergy in our core values that makes me feel truly honored to be joining the FWTEC community."

“Favor has a deep understanding of the connection between athletic activities and the development of young people,” says FWTEC President Michael Borg. “She believes it is critical to foster environments where young people feel valued and affirmed in their communities to inspire their academic achievement and civic engagement.”

Favor received her B.A. and M.ED in Educational Administration from the University of Minnesota, where she played basketball for the Gophers. She resides in Maple Grove with her husband Michael Favor, who is the principal of Robbinsdale Cooper High School. They have three daughters.
