NEW YORK - May 9, 2013 - PRLog -- The Onassis Foundation (USA) will support the New York City Greek Film Festival 2013 with $25,000 to be matched by donations to the festival up to that amount.
"We are happy to form a partnership with the festival," said Ambassador Loucas Tsilas, Executive Director of Onassis (USA). "The festival's mission is in line with our own commitment to present Hellenic achievement through our cultural programs. Since its establishment seven years ago, the festival has become an event that people in the New York City area look forward to, and we proudly endorse and support its mission of establishing a presence for Greek films in New York City."
"Even in these difficult economic times for Greece, Greek filmmakers are creating films that are worth seeing, and critics and audiences all over the world are taking notice," said Amalia Cosmetatou, the foundation's Director of Cultural Affairs. "The New York City Greek Film Festival has over the years remained true to its original vision and has consistently selected films that reflect the new vitality in today's Greek film industry. The festival is at the forefront of presenting quality films from Greece, and the Onassis Foundation's support is in recognition of this fact."
Presented under the auspices of the Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce and the Hellenic American Cultural Foundation, the festival is funded largely by donations from foundations, corporations and individuals. Since its establishment in 2007, the festival has presented more than 55 feature films and documentaries from Greece, most of them shown in the USA for the first time.
"The Onassis Foundation has a long history of excellence in cultural programming in this city," said festival director James DeMetro. "It has set an impressive standard that I have envied and aspired to achieve for our festival. Being recognized by the Onassis Foundation and being awarded this generous grant gives those of  us who work on the festival new energy and determination to present an event that we will all be proud of."
This year the festival will be at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria on October 5 and 6, and at the NYIT Auditorium in Manhattan, Broadway at 62nd Street, October 11 through 13. Yet to be announced are additional dates for special events and screenings at New York City's famed  Cinema Village.
