Yosemite Conservancy to Offer PACK6 Hiking Essentials at SAR Presentations

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. - May 6, 2013 - PRLog -- Last week’s “season opener” of the Yosemite Conservancy’s “Search and Rescue” presentation (http://www.yosemiteconservancy.org/experience-yosemite/arts-theater) included a new feature – kits of hiking essentials from PACK6 (http://www.pack6.biz/).  The presentation – offered each Tuesday evening at the Yosemite Theater, is hosted by expert rescue Ranger John Dill, who recounts “thrilling stories of daring search and rescue response teams in Yosemite.”  In an effort to help equip hikers who may be lacking critical safety gear, the Conservancy has partnered with PACK6 to offer kits for sale to attendees, each containing a signal mirror, whistle, and emergency blanket.
PACK6 President Honor Boone, whose brother disappeared while hiking in Yosemite in 2005, is optimistic that the hard-won lessons of past search and rescue incidents will hit home with hikers attending Dill’s presentation.  “So many tragedies could be prevented with a little more preparation,” says Boone.  “Preparing yourself for what you expect to happen just isn’t enough.  You need to be ready for all the possibilities – weather changes, injury or illness, children wandering off…even your own bad judgment.”  One simple step hikers can take is to tell someone where they are going, and when they expect to be back.  “And always carry the essentials,” says Boone.  “Every hiker.  Every hike.”

Boone’s brother – Michael Ficery – was hiking alone in the Tiltill Valley region of Yosemite in June 2005 when he failed to return on schedule.  In spite of what became the most expensive in the park’s history ($452,000), Ficery’s remains were never found.
