The events are free and open to the public, featuring a variety of speakers, fitness activities, training tips.
By: The New Jersey Marathon More than 18,000 are expected to attend what has become an annual celebration of health, fitness, nutrition and running. Friday's session runs from 1-7 p.m., while Saturday covers 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. This year's Novo Nordisk Health & Fitness Expo will see the introduction of a free speaker series to help runners of all athletic abilities learn the latest in racing, nutrition, hydration, health, injury prevention and recovery tips and techniques to help make racing as safe and enjoyable as possible. Active presentations on Friday include yoga, Zumba, Chi Running and power yoga. Saturday's slate features those plus a mid-morning stretch and qigong, a Chinese mind-body practice. Participants must bring mats, towels and any other needed items as none will be available on site. The speaker series includes such topics as: Inspiring people to give their all, regardless of what their "all" may be: Dane Rauschenberg, American long-distance runner who ran 52 marathons, one every weekend, throughout 2006, and motivational speaker. Advice and motivation for runners into their 50’s and 60’s: Joe Muldowney, author and veteran runner who will be offering advice and motivation for runners into their 50’s and 60’s as well as achieving your personal best. Pre-marathon stretching demo, and Nutrition and Hydration, 24 Hours Before a Marathon and During the Race: Barbara B. Mintz, MS, RD, assistant vice president, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, A Barnabas Health facility?. Diabetes Education and Importance of Awareness: Autumn Dempsey, RN CDE, program coordinator, Diabetes Education Center at Monmouth Medical Center, a Barnabas Health Facility. Nutrition for Top Performance: Runner Specific: How to Avoid a Trip to the ER – Planning is Everything: Deb Cioffi, R.N., M.S.A., M.S.N., administrative director of emergency services and Victor Almeida, MD, chair of emergency medicine, Monmouth Medical Center. Exercise professionals conducting the active presentations include Maxine Guenther (qigong), Hot and Soul Yoga, Synergy Yoga, Dave Stretanski (Chi Running) and Envision Gym. With the theme “Up & Running,” the state's premiere road race event is set to run through eight New Jersey towns, beginning at Monmouth Park in Oceanport and continuing through Monmouth Beach, Deal, Allenhurst, Lock Arbour, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove and Long Branch. The race, which annually attracts thousands of competitors, volunteers and supporters, has taken on additional, poignant meaning to those still affected by the damage inflicted on the region by Superstorm Sandy in October. In addition to the Novo Nordisk Health & Fitness Expo, a full weekend of activities for the whole family is scheduled for May 3-5, including the Barnabas Health Family Festival and Kids Races, full marathon, half-marathon and half-marathon relay.
