Author & Women’s Motivational Speaker, Journalist Sophia A. Nelson Returns to Houston Texas

ASHBURN, Va. - May 2, 2013 - PRLog -- WHAT: MSNBC/TVOneTV personality, Essence Magazine & Newsweek Daily Beast writer Sophia A. Nelson will be in Houston starting May 8th for ME&WE, Inc. hosted women’s motivational and empowerment event titled “Ignite the Power in YOU” Life Class, and Mother’s Day Brunch. The event is officially sold-out (some additional seats have been added through May 5th). The event Mistress of Ceremonies is Ms. Nikki Woods, of the Nationally Syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show. The event will be held May 11th at the JW Marriott, Galleria on Westheimer Road in Houston.  It starts at 8:30AM (registration) and ends 2PM. The event is open to all women, professionals, networks, and corporations but is capped at 250 guests to keep the life class and social media interactions intimate, effective and interactive.

WHO: The event will honor some of Houston’s most accomplished women in the fields of medicine, business, ministry & media. Event honorees are Sonny Jiles Publisher of the Houston Defender, Deborah Clifton entrepreneur, Dr. Joni Hare, MD and Pastor Bridgette Hilliard of New Light Christian Center & Women Who Win Conference.

COMMUNITY IMPACT: Nelson was in Houston briefly in 2012 with her award-winning hardcover book, Black Woman Redefined Dispelling Myths and Discovering Fulfillment in the Age of Michelle Obama (Benbella 2011) as moderator of Rolling Out Magazine's "Female Success Factor" Panel at the 2012 Metamorphosis Conference. She returns to Houston this time with her best-selling Trade Paperback Revised edition of the same book.

Nelson is the featured presenter of a very special "Life Class Redefined" created specifically for the Houston community (modeling Oprah’s Master Class). She will also moderate the Essence First Ladies’ Club Panel based on her February 2013 article by the same name on the inner lives of preacher’s wives. That panel will feature Pastor Bridgette Hilliard, Lady Audrey Cosby of Wheeler Baptist, former Lady’s Cherry Carr and Kim Bady (both featured in the Essence article) and of course Houston surgeon Sonya Sloan, MD.  

Dr. Sloan is one of the nation's few African American female orthopedic surgeons. She is also one of Houston's "Top 25 Women" Award winners (2012). She is an active mom with three small children, and she is the wife of Senior Pastor Timothy Sloan of Houston's The Luke Humble. Sloan is also founder and executive director of ME&WE, Inc. of Houston which is a 501c3 dedicated to the positive motivation and empowerment of women in America.

Nelson and Sloan are both members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Nelson was the keynote speaker at the undergraduate luncheon at the South Central Regional Conference in March.  The two women will join forces next week to make a positive impact on women of the next generation by teaching what Nelson likes to call, "life tools" that help women to better balance, integrate, appreciate, collaborate with and support one another in an out of the workforce. Nelson is a licensed attorney and is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. Nelson kicked off the official Ready.Set.Redefine.2013. Tour this past February at Alabama A&M University, Comcast/NBCUniversal worldwide headquarters in Philadelphia, and Credit Suisse on Wall Street in New York.

She has been on recent stops in San Francisco, New Orleans, Augusta, and Washington DC, as well since March. She has drawn crowds over 3000 at her speaking events and workshop/Life Classes which are capped at 250 people. Last month, Nelson was featured with former Super Model turned business mogul Kathy Ireland and others at the "Your Dream Is Out There" Conference sponsored by American Family Insurance.  Nelson is on a national tour of colleges, corporations, cities, and communities to help women leaders and professionals of a new generation learn how both to “define” and “redefine” their lives in the modern workforce.  Nelson is considered a leading corporate coach and thought leader on all things work place diversity, corporate coaching, pay equity, and personal development and leadership skills.
