SOUTH PETHERTON, U.K. - May 2, 2013 - PRLog -- Bringing Export Week to a close, the Somerset in Business Conference 2013 ‘International trade is good for Somerset’ will provide opportunities for new exporters and practical advice for existing exporters, with a focus on high growth markets including, China, India and Brazil. The event will explore investment opportunities in Somerset for inbound nuclear-related businesses, demonstrating that inward investment from international trade can also offer opportunities for local businesses to collaborate.

With the Government’s aim to double UK exports to £1trillion a year and get 100,000 more UK companies exporting by 2020, the keynote speech at the conference by Nick Baird, CEO of UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), will discuss how high growth markets are changing the face of international business and why Somerset businesses should get involved.

Speakers include:

·         Was Rahman, Advisor on Global Technology Industries for UKTI: Opportunities for Trading with India

·         Philip Gray, Managing Director, Commercial Doctor Ltd: Brazil - opportunities for UK Businesses

·         Antoaneta Becker, UKTI China Markets Advisor: Challenges and opportunities - trading with China

·         Professor Jay Kettle Williams, University of Plymouth: Cultural aspects of international trade

The latest figures (March 2013) released by HM Revenue & Customs show exports from the South West fell in 2012 - to a total value of £12.3billion, representing a 1.16 per cent drop from the previous year. However, exporting increased in the last two quarters of the year across the region. For the fourth quarter of 2012 exports exceeded those for Q4 2011, and the number of South West active exporters increased by 3.7 per cent, while the number of exporters decreased in most of England’s regions. With the help of events such as the Somerset in Business Conference, Into Somerset looks to raise the profile of Somerset as a place to do business by increasing the number of companies exporting and attracting investment in the county.

Rupert Cox, CEO of Into Somerset, says, “Exporting is a cornerstone of Britain’s trading success and emerging markets offer lucrative opportunities for British businesses and Somerset businesses. The line-up of speakers and the one-to-one sessions with UKTI at the event will give SMEs the opportunity to gain valuable advice from experts on doing business abroad, learn best practice and hear about opportunities in different markets.”

The conference will also address investing in Somerset for nuclear, with opportunities for inward investment and exporting.  Remy Roussel, Major Projects Director, at Bouygues, part of the BYLOR joint venture with Laing O’Rourke will give a keynote speech, addressing supply and collaboration opportunities for local businesses and how Hinkley-ready businesses can export their skills to other projects.

During afternoon surgery sessions, delegates will have the opportunity of meeting one-to-one with representatives from UKTI, the Hinkley Supply Chain project and Into Somerset.

The Somerset in Business Conference takes place on Friday 17 May 2013, the end of Export Week (13-17 May), at the Westland Conference & Leisure Complex in Yeovil.

It is organised jointly by inward investment organisation Into Somerset and the Somerset Chamber of Commerce, in association with UKTI. http://www.somerset-chamber.co.uk/events/somerset-chamber/somerset-in-business-conference.htm
