MOTHER’S DAY SPECIAL

SUPER MUM FACTS

·         Female baboons, like other Old World monkeys, give birth to one baby at a time. Like other mammals, the baby baboon depends on its mother’s milk for food. The mother often carries her baby under her belly wherever she goes. As the baby grows older, the mother begins to carry it on her back. A mother baboon can count on fellow troop members to help her care for her baby as other troop members sometimes carry the babies, too.

·         A giraffe’scoat is special and is unique like a fingerprint as each giraffe has its own distinct pattern. A baby giraffe can recognize its mother by her unique coat pattern.

·         Koalasare one of the pickiest eaters in the world. They only eat the highly poisonous leaves of eucalyptus trees and manage to survive on this deadly diet thanks to digestive systemsthat arepacked with special bacteria that detoxify the leaves. Koala babies are not born with the bacteria so koala moms have to pass the bugs on and they do so by making a tasty treat of bacteria filled droppings (potty).

·         A thousand pound polar bear gives birth to a one pound baby. That would be like us giving birth to a baby smaller than, a golf ball. The cub stays with its sleepy mother for ten weeks, feeding off her fat which has been converted into energy rich milk.

·         Mountain gorilla babies suckle for three years and remain within sight of theirmothers for at least a decade.Theylive with extended families, with more than 20 uncles, aunts, cousins, brothers and sisters.

·         In Antarctica, an Emperor penguin lays only one egg. There is no food on the ice, so the mother leaves to search for food. In the meantime, the father takes care of the egg and makes a bond with his chick. The mother returns with food in about 65 days.

·         An elephant mother has a 22-month long pregnancy period and its newborn weighs over 100 kilograms.

·         The eggs laid by ostrich mothersare protected by such strong shells that very often, theyhave to help their chicks come out.

·         Baby chimpanzees spend years learning about survival and their traditions from their mothers. In Central Africa, chimpanzees crack nuts with rocks. In East Africa, they catch termites using twigs. These tricksare passed down from mother to baby from generation to generation.
