Gymnastics Leotards a Balance of Art and Science

Marie Porter’s new book teaches how to create beautiful leotards at home.

MINNEAPOLIS - April 30, 2013 - PRLog -- May 1, 2013 - Minneapolis, MN  - Gymnastics is a set of sports that are almost as well known for their pageantry as for their athleticism, due in no small part to the costuming.

Just as the athletes manage to make their difficult moves look effortless, it can be easy to miss all of the planning and work that goes into producing their competitive leotards. Beyond what you see on the floor, there exists the world of design, sewing... and parents feverishly attaching crystals to spandex.

Few know this world better than Marie Porter, an author and retired spandex costumer. In her illustrious spandex costuming career, Porter designed and created imaginative, durable costumes for athletes both domestic and international - including many national and international level competitors.  Now, her latest book teaches how to create competitive gymnastics leotards.. Just like those seen on TV.

“The interesting thing about sewing for gymnasts is that there are so many different types, varied disciplines... each with their own styles and standards of costuming. The two that come to mind, for most people, are rhythmic and artistic gymnastics. In addition, there’s also tumbling, aerobic gymnastics, trampoline, acrobatic...  Some feature skirted suits, others do not.  Some are extremely ornate, such as the intricately painted leotards used in rhythmic gymnastics... while others are fairly simple and unadorned in design. In writing “Sewing for Gymnasts”, I wanted to create a comprehensive manual to aid those costuming for any gymnastics discipline.”, explains Porter.

Porter has compiled all of her spandex costuming knowledge and techniques into a new series of sewing manuals, “Spandex Simplified”.  Written completely in layman terms and carefully explained, Porter presents readers with the skills and knowledge to design and make almost any design of competitive synchronized swim suit (“Synchro Swimwear”), and figure skating dress (“Sewing for Skaters”) they can imagine.  “Spandex Simplified: Sewing for Gymnasts” is the third book in the series, teaching everything from the basics, to Porter's secrets of the trade.

" 'Performance' sports can get expensive quickly, and sewing the leotards at home is a great way to bring down some of that cost. I know - I was a figure skater when I was younger! It was the desire to save money and have more control over my costumes that led me to get started in spandex costumes way back when I was only 11 years old. I'm so excited to be able to bring my experience and knowledge to the dedicated athletes - and parents - involved with gymnastics"

“Spandex Simplified: Sewing For Gymnasts” releases on May 3, 2013
