FORT PARKWAY, U.K. - April 30, 2013 - PRLog -- Multiple cities around Europe may need to erect flood defenses as large as the Thames barrier as climate change takes hold and tidal surges become more likely.

The Thames Barrier in London protects the capital from sea surges, floods, heavy rainfall and rising sea levels. Europe has been warned that it may be necessary to provide flood defenses as large as the Thames barrier for many rivers across Europe to ensure protection from floods and sea surges, as well as more destructive storms and rising sea levels. The effects of climate change are not going to affect just the rivers themselves, multiple plans will need to be made for a variety of different industries and potential circumstances to protect livelihoods of those that work and depend on land near these rivers. “If there are businesses and families that depend on a certain river or riverbanks, or even the land nearby, they will need to set some sort of plan of defense as climate change increases the risk of floods and storms, their businesses livelihoods and homes could be ruined if they do not prepare in advance” says Mark McAlear, Managing Director of EUM Consultants. Vineyards across the continent may have to plant new grape varieties, farmers may have to cultivate new crops and water suppliers may have to look into new technology to cope with the potential extreme weather Europe may face in the future. “This time we should be concerned, if it is a high probability that extreme weather as well as floods are likely, changes need to be made sooner rather than later to protect those that rely on businesses such as vineyards – as well as those that enjoy a glass of wine!” says Alex Tsimboykas, sales director of EUM Consultants.

These warnings have been reported by the European Environment Agency. It found that as little as half of the 32 members’ countries of the EEA actually have plans to adapt to the effects of global warming. Which means over half have made no plans to help protect those that need, or will need, help. “To sustain our wellbeing, we need to invest in long-term solutions to protect against climate change” says Mark McAlear of EUM Consultants.

Climate change is not something we haven’t seen or heard of before, it is changing as we speak, certain countries are heating up in Europe and facing regular heat waves, and some are having larger amounts of rainfall and more devastating storms which are leading to flooding. It is getting increasingly more likely that the drastic weather changes and extreme weather events are going to get worse. “The Thames barrier has been raised many more times than initially expected, and this is very likely to be down to climate change, many rivers need to have similar defense systems to protect their banks from bursting and causing a repeat of the floods in the UK in 1953 that claimed hundreds of lives” says Alex Tsimboykas, Sales Director of EUM Consultants.

Protecting rivers from flooding with these huge defense systems are not cheap; however the cost of a devastating flood and the lives that floods can take cannot be priced.
