CONNOLLY, Ireland - April 29, 2013 - PRLog -- The award scheme adjudication panel selected the Hockey team, which is part of the Rosbrien-based Catholic Institute Athletic Club, after they claimed both the Munster League and the Munster Barber Cup having beaten UCC in the final.

The Catholic Institute Athletic Club was formed in 1910 and is one of the oldest sporting institutions in Munster and Ireland. The club has a long and rich tradition in the Limerick area for promoting the sport of Hockey and throughout the decades has provided Munster and Ireland with numerous Tennis , Hockey and Squash International and Interprovincial players.

Open to all 700 clubs in Limerick City and County, the winners of the monthly award are decided by a committee made up of LSP staff and Fleming Medical staff. At the end of the year the monthly winners will be invited to the County Limerick Local Sports Partnership (CLLSP) annual awards ceremony where the sporting performance of the year will win an AED (provided by Fleming Medical) worth €2400, an AED training evening for 8 people worth €600 and a perpetual trophy.

“The Performance in Sport Award recognises the valuable contribution made by sporting clubs and organisations to community life throughout Limerick,” explained CLLSP Coordinator, Phelim Macken.

He continued: “The Catholic Institute Men’s seconds are thoroughly deserving of the second monthly Performance in Sport Award. The team is made up of senior and youth players, each of whom have brought considerable success to the Catholic Institute Athletic Club during the past few weeks. It is worth noting that 10 of the side’s players have come through the clubs underage programme and this was their first season in an adult competition.”

17-year-old cross country athlete and Scoil Pol Secondary school student Ed Valetka from Kilfinane was named the inaugural winner of the monthly Performance in Sport Award in March.

Entries to the Performance in Sport Award must be forwarded by the clubs themselves by email to infosports@limerickcoco.ie  before 1pm on the last Friday of each month before the results are published. A club can win the monthly award more than once but the overall award goes to the best sporting performance of the year and not the club who wins the most monthly awards. Winners will be published every month in the CLLSP & LCSP notes in the local media and through correspondence with Sports clubs.
