Mobile App Attempts To Give The Blind Some Of Their Independence Back For Five Dollars

Scanthing, a mobile app for the Android is pleased to announce that its EyesFree feature is now available on the Google Play Marketplace.

April 28, 2013 - PRLog -- This means that Scanthing is fully integrated into Android Talkback.  Talkback is an Accessibility Service that helps blind and vision-impaired users to interact with their devices more easily. Scanthing provides blind users a one-click service that takes an image, extracts text from the image using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology and plays back the recognised text using a Text-To-Speech (TTS) engine of the users choice. Proprietary text cleaning algorithms are also used to remove any garbage from the OCR process.

Access Ana, the co-host of ‘That Android Show’, a blog and podcasting site dedicated to accessible Android technology, has the following to say about this release: “Scanthing is an exciting product. It’s as small as a cell phone and as affordable as a cup of coffee with friends, but what it offers blind and low-vision users is bigger and more valuable than both: the freedom and independence to read mail, fliers, product packaging—in short, the print that surrounds us everyday. The fact that the development team is receptive to the use needs of this community is as exciting.”

The app is available right now, globally on Google Play for $5 from this link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.scanthi...
