PRLog - April 26, 2013 - CHICAGO -- Dr. Seema Ashrafi, Clinical Associate Professor, Periodontics, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, recently was named a Chicago Dental Society Foundation Clinical Fellow.

Dr. Ashrafi serves as Director of the Predoctoral Periodontics Program and is responsible for the Periodontics curriculum. She was instrumental in the development of the new DMD case-based dental student curriculum.
She had been nominated for the honor by the College and the Department of Periodontics.
“The purpose of this Fellowship is to motivate faculty to pursue self-development for the good of dental education, and I am truly honored and grateful to the Chicago Dental Society Foundation for providing me with it,” Dr. Ashrafi said.
Dr. Ashrafi explained that the Fellowship carries a cash award to support developmental activities such as meetings, education courses, and leadership training.
“I can use the award to attend meetings that would extend my leadership knowledge in education nationally,”
Dr. Ashrafi noted that she may also use the funding to purchase books and other educational materials that may be beneficial for Predoctoral Periodontics education.
“Dr. Ashrafi is a respected and valued clinical dental educator in the UIC College of Dentistry who will be an exemplary CDS Foundation Fellow,” said Dean Bruce Graham. “As the College celebrates its Centennial anniversary year in 2013, I want to take this opportunity to thank the CDS Foundation and the CDS for their wonderful financial support of the UIC College of Dentistry throughout its proud history.”
Dr. Ashrafi succeeds CDS Foundation Fellow Dr. Marilia Montero-Fayad, Assistant Professor, and Pediatric Dentistry. The College’s other CDS Foundation Fellow is Dr. Priscilla Chang, Clinical Assistant Professor, Restorative Dentistry.
A full-time faculty member, Dr. Ashrafi is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, and maintains a part-time clinical practice of periodontics in the College’s Allen W. Anderson Faculty Dental Practice.
Dean Graham described her as “a master teacher and outstanding dental educator.” She was elected to Fellowship in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Dental Society by her faculty peers in 2003. She was awarded the American Academy of Periodontology Clinical Teaching Award in 2005, the E. Lloyd Du Brul Faculty Achievement Award by the UIC Dental Alumni Association Board of Directors for 2008, a Crystal Apple Award by the Class of 2008, and a Golden Apple Award by Class of 2014 for teaching excellence.
