Shield Infographic Offers Tips & Advice to Motorhomers Heading on Summer Adventures

Shield has launched a fun new infographic offering motorhomers important tips and advice before they hit the road this summer.

April 26, 2013 - PRLog -- A massive 1.5million people go on a motorhome holiday each year - many of them at the same time. This means that hazards such as accidents and thefts increase during the summer months.

Forewarned is forearmed - take the Shield motorhome journey at www.shieldtotalinsurance.co.uk/motorhome-holidays and Shield’s armadillo will provide you with useful facts along the way to keep in mind when planning your summer adventure... or to drop into late night campfire conversations.

·     19% of all motorhome insurance claims made to Shield relate to road accidents.

Watch out, with more motorhomers on the road, there is a greater chance of an accident. Shield advises you to travel in the quieter road times - outside of rush hour and away from busy city centres. Take regular breaks and don’t drive tired.

·      46% of all motorhome insurance claims made to Shield are for windscreen or glass damage.

When on the road beware of flying stones and gravel. If you are hit, it’s great to know that Shield offers unlimited windscreen cover. Before you travel, print off your policy documents and a list of useful phone numbers, including the glass replacement contact number. Better still, store them in your mobile phone.

·     Schedule a break at a motorhome-friendly service station - and  watch out for thieves.

Motorway service stations are prime spots for thefts and break-ins by opportunist thieves - stay security conscious. There are 89 motorhome friendly service stations in the UK, so if you need to, schedule a break at one of them. When stopped make sure you fully lock your motorhome if you leave it and do not leave anything visible that would tempt a potential thief. If you can, take it in turns to visit the rest facilities leaving an adult in the vehicle. Park in a well-lit area protected by security cameras. Steering wheel locks, anti-theft registration plates and wheel clamps are relatively low cost measures and can be a deterrent to potential thieves. The good news is that less than 1% of motorhome thefts occur on campsites.

·     40% of motorhomes stolen are recovered. This is helped by the use of tracking devices.

A range of tracking and security devices are available to motorhome owners, a comprehensive list can be found on the Shield website. Not only can a tracking device help recover your motorhome in the event of theft, when fitted and used correctly they can help lower your insurance premium too. Consider investing in one before you hit the road this summer.

·    Travelling to Europe? Stay as long as you like; Shield offers motorhome insurance cover for up to 180 days of European travel.

Always make sure you know what your motorhome insurance policy covers when planning a journey to Europe. Not all policies include travel outside of the UK or repatriation should you become involved in an accident. Check now and avoid potential problems later.

·   Think about storage for the end of the season. Over 250 CaSSOA storage sites are Gold accredited.

Sadly, the summer won’t last forever. At the end of it, consider investing in safe storage for your vehicle. CaSSOA storage sites are statistically the safest place to store your motorhome and could help reduce your insurance premium by 10%.

Remember it pays to plan ahead; time taken now can save you time and money in the long run and makes for carefree summer motorhome adventures.
