CULLMAN, Ala. - April 25, 2013 - PRLog -- The Alabama Kidney Foundation’s 2013 Walk-A-Thon will be held on April 27, 2013 at Westminster Academy, located at 237 Johns Road, Huntsville, AL 35806. Registration will begin at 8:30 A.M. and the Walk-A-Thon will begin at 9:30 A.M. This special event is open to the general public and benefits Alabama dialysis patients.

There are nearly 8,000 people in the state of Alabama that require dialysis due to End Stage Renal Disease. Diabetes and uncontrolled high blood pressure are the two leading causes for kidney failure contributing to nearly 6,000 of Alabama’s dialysis population. Often there are no symptoms leading up to kidney failure. It is estimated that 1 in 8 American adults have chronic kidney disease. You or someone you know may be affected by chronic kidney disease. Do you know if you are 1 in 8?

The Alabama Kidney Foundation (AKF) has been assisting dialysis patients in the state of Alabama for nearly 38 years. They play a fundamental part in assisting dialysis patients with various needs. Their services include financial assistance, support services, and education for dialysis patients, the public, and organ donation awareness. The Alabama Kidney Foundation provided nearly $632,000 in financial assistance to dialysis patients in Alabama during the year of 2011. As the dialysis population in Alabama continues to grow, so does the need for the Alabama Kidney Foundation.

Dialysis Clinic, Inc., Cullman, Decatur and Moulton provide dialysis services to over 200 patients. The Alabama Kidney Foundation has provided over $4,000 in financial assistance to patients in these three counties. The three local dialysis clinics have joined together to form the TRI-COUNTY KIDNEY KREW to assist the Alabama Kidney Foundation in their fundraising efforts to benefit dialysis patients in Alabama. The TRI-COUNTY KIDNEY KREW will be offering free screening for at risk individuals, which include individuals with diabetes and/or high blood pressure, at the 2013 Walk-A-Thon. The screening process will include free education, at risk questionnaire, blood pressure check, a glucose check, and a urinalysis. Please stop by and show your support at the Alabama Kidney Foundation’s 2013 Walk-A-Thon and don’t forget to visit our booth RU1N8. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation please contact April Ryan at 256-350-8882.

Please come out on April 27, 2013 and show your support.
