is excited to announce that the new Cadillac ELR is set to come with a feature available on no other electric car. While most vehicles that run on electric power use some sort of regenerative braking to utilize energy from braking to help recharge the battery, the 2014 Cadillac ELR will be the first vehicle to have a user controlled system. Regen On Demand, as Cadillac is calling it will be controlled by steering wheel-mounted paddles, which will enable the driver to manually switch the feature on. This will slow the vehicle down, much like downshifting a vehicle with a manual transmission.
While the paddles on the back of a steering wheel in many contemporary performance vehicles allow the driver the control the transmission, shifting either up or down, the paddles on the ELR will both have the same function. Holding either one of the paddles will activate the Regen On Demand, to capture electricity and ultimately save gas. The ELR, which is an electric vehicle related to the Chevy Volt, will convert the energy from momentum into electricity, which is stored in the lithium-ion battery, mounted in the center of the vehicle for optimal weight distribution.
The 2014 Cadillac ELR (
http://www.motorwerkscadillac.com/2014-cadillac-elr.htm) will be powered by an electric motor, which is capable of 295 lb-ft of torque. Since the electric motor drives the wheels, and the gasoline powered part of the drivetrain acts only as a generator; by recapturing power from braking, drivers can actually increase the all-electric range by smartly using the Regen On Demand feature. The electric range for the ELR is expected to be around 35 miles, depending on driving techniques, conditions, and terrain. Cadillac has not released more information on how the Regen On Demand feature might affect the mileage and range, but a very careful driver might actually be able to exceed the EPA estimates.
The new 2014 Cadillac ELR should arrive at Motor Werks Cadillac at 206 N. Cook Rd. in Barrington, IL (
