The Terraces of Phoenix Donates Money To Help Further Education

Residents at Local Senior Living Community Create Scholarship Program for Staff

April 23, 2013 - PRLog -- PHOENIX, Ariz.: Team members at The Terraces of Phoenix spend every day working with and providing a variety of services and care for residents. Their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed, as residents of the senior living community appreciate their service and have shown their support by creating a scholarship program, which to date, has awarded more than $5,000 to team members who are pursuing a higher education.

One recipient is Chantal Duquette, who is a part-time server in the dining room at The Terraces, and a student at Arizona State University. To date, she has received three grants from the community, which have enabled her to continue her education and work towards her degree.

“It seemed like a good idea, especially to those of us who've been in education,” says Stanley Sutphin, a former college professor and resident who chairs the scholarship committee.

“I’m grateful that the residents care about the staff’s educational goals,” says Duquette, who wants to continue to work for a nonprofit organization after she gets her degree in nonprofit management this December. “There are a lot of places you could work where you would not find this kind of support. They’re generous people.”

The grants are offered to part-time team members with a high school diploma or equivalent, who have worked at The Terraces for six months or more. Many of the grant recipients are just out of high school and are working with the desire to go to college or vocational school, often with the aim of becoming certified nursing assistants.

Sutphin, along with a number of residents, distributes flyers to inform team members of the educational grants and how to apply. But often, likely candidates come to their attention in a more informal way.
“We may have a new person working in the dining room, and as they serve our tables and we talk to them, we find out they’re interested in going further with their education,” Sutphin said. “So we encourage them to apply for a grant, and stress the importance of a higher education.”
