Short University Course Can Help Companies Comply with New Product Safety Laws

ST. LOUIS - April 23, 2013 - PRLog -- Companies that produce, sell, or distribute consumer products  now have available a short university course to help them immediately develop or improve their product safety programs so they comply with new federal laws introduced by Congress through the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008.     The course takes place on June 25 & 26 at Saint Louis University’s Center for Supply Chain Management Studies.  Interested individuals can register at education.adksafetyinto.com, or can call the Center at 314-977-3617 for more information.      Product Safety Program Development, a 2-day basic course for organizing a product safety program, is designed for current working professionals in the consumer product field. The university has achieved national recognition for its pioneer work in product safety education, winning a special commendation in 2012 from the chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).     This course will be useful for professionals with companies that manufacture, retail, distribute, license, or import consumer products, and is suitable for anyone with or without a technical or safety background. The basic premise is critical thinking; no specific technical knowledge is required. Class members generally come from areas of a company dealing with risk assessment, new product development and engineering, product integrity, quality assurance, and product safety management.     The course instructor is Richard Stern, who leads Whirlpool Corporation's global product safety training program and is their Product Safety Senior Manager for Innovation Projects. He has taught product safety management in a number of Saint Louis University courses and is a former Associate Director in the CPSC's Office of Compliance.     The 2-day workshop includes requirements for an effective and regulatory compliant product safety management program. Students will gain information on the regulatory, legal and moral requirements for effective product safety program development, implementation and adherence. Detailed discussion and exercises will focus on basic product safety concepts such as hazard identification, hazard evaluation/risk Assessment and hazard closure/mitigation. Students completing this workshop will have the tools and critical thinking necessary to developing a product safety program for their individual company.
