KITTY HAWK, N.C. - April 22, 2013 - PRLog -- Millions are familiar with the wild horses that roam Assateague Island. Besides the beaches, the horses are the biggest tourist attraction on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia. When John Amrhein set out as a diver to locate the ship in 1980 he was mystified when the shipwreck was not in the location delineated by the galleon captain. After several more years of looking he realized that the shipwreck galleon http://www.thehiddengalleon.com was buried in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. It was in fact at the exact location described by the Spanish captain, only it was not in the ocean but buried beneath Assateague. His tools included not only sophisticated electronics and meticulous research, but he was armed with a first-hand account of the shipwreck legend as given to him by a descendent of an Assateague Indian and great nephew to Clarence “Grandpa Beebe.” He was the character in Marguerite Henry’s Misty of Chincoteague who described the legend that the present day horses descended from those that swam ashore from a centuries old Spanish galleon.

Amrhein’s book is dedicated to the idea that someday soon the federal government will allow archaeological investigations to begin with the idea that a museum will house the remains of this very historic shipwreck .
Amrhein will be at Costco in Norfolk, Virginia, on Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 1 to 3 pm.
