April 22, 2013 - PRLog -- (LEXINGTON, K.Y.) – To help end the fight against hunger, PODS® Lexington, a moving and storage company, has teamed up with the Lexington Legends for the “Stock the PODS® container God’s Pantry Food Bank” food drive from May 9 – 12 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. During the four game series, game goers who bring a nonperishable food item will receive $1 off their ticket price. The drive will help raise awareness of the problem of hunger in Kentucky.

“For many, spring brings the joy of an evening at the ballpark with hot dogs, popcorn and soft drinks, but for Kentuckians struggling with hunger, the seasons never change because when you are hungry it is hard to think of anything else,” said Marian Guinn, CEO of God’s Pantry Food Bank. “We are excited to have a PODS® container placed at Whitaker Bank Ballpark so Legends fans can share their joy with families in need by bringing gifts of nonperishable food and help Stock the PODS.”

According to Guinn, 1 in 5 Kentuckians are struggling to meet the nutritional requirements of their household. According to the “Food Hardship in America 2012" report, Kentucky ranks 19th in states for food hardships and with the possibility of food stamp funds being cut and families not earning enough from their jobs, the high demand for food continues to rise as food banks try to meet the needs for emergency food assistance.

During the drive, a safe and secure PODS® container will be placed in the ballpark’s parking lot during the Lexington Legends vs. West Virginia Power baseball games. Nonperishable food items needed include: canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned tomatoes, canned soup, canned tuna, canned chicken, fruit juice, pasta, rice, hot and cold cereals, and peanut butter. Once the container is filled, all donations collected will be delivered to God's Pantry Food Bank.

“The Legends are thrilled to be able to partner with PODS and God’s Pantry Food Bank to provide our fans another great opportunity to make a difference in our communities,” said Seth Poteat, general manager of the Lexington Legends. “Not only can they come out and enjoy a beautiful night at the ballpark, but they can help in the fight to end hunger in Kentucky. We are looking forward to the drive and seeing our fans and community rally together to help their neighbors.”

God’s Pantry Food Bank feeds 1 in 7 Kentuckians through its network of more than 270 member agencies and its own direct service programs. The Fayette County Pantry Program, operated by God’s Pantry Food Bank, provides a 7 – 10 day supply of groceries to an average of 1,750 families each month.

“Our hearts go out to those in need. We are committed to feeding as many mouths as possible and hope that the community sees the impact they are making when they drop off a food item,” said Ken Kocon, general manager of PODS Lexington. “To have the public come together and support those in need is a great step in helping end hunger in our community.”
