Shutts & Bowen Partner Harvey Oyer to receive National Community Service Award from the DAR

The Daughters of the American Revolution is giving the lawyer, author and fifth-generation Palm Beach County native the honor for his contributions to historic preservation and education

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - April 22, 2013 - PRLog -- WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- Harvey E. Oyer, III, a partner in the West Palm Beach office of Shutts & Bowen, is to receive the National Community Service Award from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The society will present the award May 11 for Mr. Oyer’s contributions to historic preservation and education. A fifth-generation Palm Beach County native, Mr. Oyer chairs Shutts & Bowen’s Land Use Practice Group and is a member of its Real Estate Practice Group.

Among many other community endeavors, Mr. Oyer spearheaded the restoration of the Palm Beach County Courthouse. He is an accomplished historian, archeologist, lecturer and writer, and is particularly well known as the author of The Adventures of Charlie Pierce children’s series, fictionally retracing his ancestors’ lives in the Palm Beach County wilderness in the 1870s, with a rigorous sense of historical accuracy. He has been the recipient of numerous local and national community service and literary awards.

In addition, Mr. Oyer serves as a Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches, a Trustee and General Counsel of the South Florida Science Museum, and a Director of the Florida Historical Society.  He served for seven years as the Chairman of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, six years as a Director of the Palm Beach County Cultural Council, six years as a Trustee of the Palm Beach United Way, and as a Fellow of the Duke of Edinburgh Foundation (U.K.).  He has served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Miami School of Law and as an Adjunct Professor at the Florida Atlantic University Honors College.

The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children. It has 170,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the country and is open to any woman 18 or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution.
