Follow on Google News | Slate tablets more than triple through Western European distributionConsumer PC sales through Western European distribution remain weak in Q1 2013
By: Fundamental Communications Consumer PC sales remained affected by an overall decline of netbook sales as well as by economic constraints across the region. A further factor was the continuing trend in consumer behaviour to increasingly opt for tablet devices rather than replace traditional home PCs. This pattern was given a boost in the first quarter this year by a range of new product launches in the attractively priced, 7inch Android-based tablet segment. CONTEXT’s data reveals that Android systems accounted for over half of slate tablet sales in Q1 this year, compared with one third in Q1 2012. This increased share of lower-priced Android systems brought the overall average selling price (ASP) for Slate Tablets (all operating systems) in distribution down to €283 for Q1 this year, a fall of more than one hundred Euros from the equivalent figure a year earlier. “With an average selling price of less than that of Windows PCs, consumers are voting with their wallets, buying cheaper tablets and forgoing any renewal cycles on their home PCs for the time being “, commented CONTEXT co-founder Jeremy Davies.
