Should Cycling Be On The School Curriculum?

Yes comes the cry from fuel stretched and under exercised parents across the country. But it’s tough, cycling’s not the first thing you think to put on a priority list of what’s taught in schools.

April 19, 2013 - PRLog -- Increasingly though the sport is coming back as kids ride to school once more and parents’ cars stay in the drive.
Caught in the trap of driving children all over the place, parents are hoping that the new curriculum will add cycling to the sports being offered. This would mean that groups of children cycling to school would become more and more evident, something that has been in decline over many years. Safety in numbers is a perception that pervades and more cyclists on the roads would certainly bolster a parent’s feeling of security.

Total Cycle Assist is putting its weight behind the new drive 100%. MD for TCA Richard Williams is keen that parents and schools get the best out of cycling and their recent tie up with Bikeability cycle training shows that it can work.

‘ It’s all about safety. We offer all Bikeability course youngsters and parents specialist  cover, which ensures that in the event of an incident they have a 24 hour helpline, bike repair,  brand new bike replacement, private health care and legal support for only £2’ says Richard. ‘We know that it can be scary having your nearest and dearest cycling around on the roads, but we’d like to think that we can take a part of the weight off parents shoulders by offering reliable back up’.

Only 50% of youngsters currently have access to some form of cycle training according to British Cycling, and it needs to increase. Bikeability  trains children and teenagers out on the roads, building confidence and road awareness as well as an understanding of how to actually ride a bicycle. It’s not compulsory, but schools and clubs who engage with the training are looking to build a stronger, more road aware and environmentally positive generation of people.

‘It’s on the school curriculum in Scotland’ says Total Cycle Assists Richard Williams, ‘and it works very well. With the current drive to increase the amount of sports that our children engage in it’s the right time to really push for this’.

The department for education begun it’s curriculum consultation on April 16th and the final version of the framework will be published later this year.
