Today, selected Starbucks chains around the United Kingdom will introduce a £1 reusable cup, allowing customers to do their bit to lower their carbon footprint, as well as saving customers money every time they purchase items in Starbucks.

The cups are designed similarly to the brands white and green disposable cups, but made out of high-quality material, however they are for customers to keep and reuse. “At first I wasn’t sure if I thought it sounded like a good idea, as there is no guarantee the customers will actually reuse them or buy them in the first place, but after seeing that customers actually save money by using them, I think it’s fantastic!” says Mark McAlear of EUM Consultants, an energy efficiency company based in Birmingham.

The reusable cups will be available in some Starbucks chains as of today, and will gradually be available nationwide. To encourage customers to use them regularly, Starbucks customers will get 25 pence off of their purchase every time they use a Starbucks reusable cup, which is a huge incentive, especially to regular Starbucks customers. “More companies should get involved, everyone loves to save money and help the environment, its small incentives like these reusable cups, that are made by huge companies and chains such as Starbucks with millions of customers a year that really do make a difference” says Alex Tsimboykas, sales director at EUM Consultants. With a 25 pence saving on every coffee a customer buys, and the reusable cups costing only one pound, it only takes four coffees to make your money back on the cost of the cup. “Many people use Starbucks every day for their coffee, breakfast and snacks, saving 25p per coffee with a reusable cup could mean that regular customers make an annual saving of almost £100! With the economy in the state that it is in, saving £100 a year is advertising for anyone” says Mark McAlear, Managing Director of EUM Consultants.

Not only are these cups beneficial to customers saving money, it is also great for the environment. Think how many cups are being produced on a daily basis and then carted off to a landfill site that same evening, when they could have been recycled, or even better not been created at all because customers are reusing the one cup over and over again.

The chain is aiming for five per cent of drinks made and served in its stores to be served in reusable cups by 2015, five per cent may not sound like a huge amount, but if you base that on millions of customers a year, that is a huge saving, and a great help for the environment.

Whether you use Starbucks every day, or once a week, purchasing a reusable cup with the possibility of saving £100 a year is definitely a high priority for thousands of people around the country today.
