Follow on Google News | Let’s solve the issue of stray dogs!Bucharest, January, 21st, 2013. As both an animal lover and a resident of one of EU’s capital cities, I feel that the presence of free-ranging dogs on our streets it’s utterly inacceptable.
By: Romanian Business Acclerator I have been discussing lately with several people, both nationals and foreigners, who are involved with this phenomenon. I wanted to see what could be the most effective way of clearing the city of stray dogs. There is only one possible solution: a mass neutering campaign, including landraces living in peoples yards, doubled by an intense adoption program, perhaps even international. Obviously, the problem cannot be solved overnight, but sterilization is the only efficient way to get rid of street dogs. I know that some readers may have a somewhat vehement reaction to this solution and will demand instead that the street dogs be destroyed, killed. However, euthanasia will not address the cause of the problem, but rather the effects. Moreover, the authorities do not have the capability to effectively destroy the stray dogs by comparison to the speed with which they breed. Therefore, any tax payers’ money spent on this barbaric method could just as well be thrown down the drain. In the late ‘80s the World Health Organization published a study on the fight against rabies in underdeveloped countries. This study found that the killing of stray dogs is both ineffective and costly. I read that in the city of Oradea the canine population living on the streets has diminished by 80% in the last 5-6 years due to a massive sterilization program. So, it can be done! In order to solve the problem in Bucharest it is very important that the neutering initiative of stray dogs be doubled by the sterilization of community dogs living in people’s yards, since these are an important source of free-ranging dogs that will end up living on the streets. I am aware of the issue of the lack in financial resources. But with a touch of creativity, some things can still be done. For instance, we could create profit centers to finance massive sterilization programs. This year I will personally take charge of a particular area in Bucharest where I will start a pilot project dealing with the massive sterilization of stray dogs and the initiation of an international adoption program for these dogs. And in order to raise the money I will organize a trade fair, similar to the one in Vienna, in partnership with several companies and the profits will go towards the sterilization of stray dogs, as well as to other social projects. If the local authorities would be equally creative in their efforts of finding alternate sources for financing their efforts of stopping the breeding of stray dogs, then in just a few years these would be just a bad memory. We just need to go about it in an organized, calm and passionless manner.
