Mazda Unveils KODO: Soul of Motion Chair at Milan Design Week

Mazda enters the world of high-class design at the one of the world’s biggest design showcases.

TINLEY PARK, Ill. - April 18, 2013 - PRLog -- For those who just can’t get enough of Mazda’s distinctive KODO: Soul of Motion design language, Community Mazda of Tinley Park (http://www.communitymazda.com/company-info/about-us) has some big news. Mazda joined the world of high-class design at Milan Design Week, which took place from April 9 to 14, to show off a distinctive piece of art that the Japanese manufacturer isn’t exactly known for: a lounge chair. Mazda also showed off the next generation of the Mazda6 and an exhibit by Giuliana Cuneaz. Milan Design Week is a perfect place for the individualistic carmaker to show off the distinctive design that is the driving force behind their brand.

During Milan Design Week, Mazda opened a pop-up storefront right in the middle of the Milan fashion district in order to show off the all-new Mazda6 sedan. Mazda actually has a long history with Milan Design Week, and the KODO: Soul of Motion design language was unveiled there several years ago. It makes sense that the automaker would make major design unveilings at the show.

Peter Birtwhistle, the Mazda European Director of Design said, ““The car industry can be very predictable as to how it presents itself — motor shows, automobile magazines, etc. At Mazda we believe that we have to embrace a broader audience.” In this way Mazda reaches out not only to drivers, the automotive press, and the auto industry, but also to designers and the fashion industry.

The KODO chair, designed by Mazda, is a foray into furniture design. The KODO design language uses the muscular and athletic lines to convey motion, even while sitting still, and this chair manages to do that with extended chrome legs and a racecar-like bucket seat. While it is unclear if Mazda actually intends to sell the KODO chair, it would be exciting development for the automaker to move into the world of consumer industrial and furniture design.
